Pat
Lytle was born in New York in 1959. She moved to southern
California with her family as a child where she was heavily involved
in art throughout high school. Her main focus was in charcoal and won
several awards in local student shows. However, after high school she
pursued a career in horses until 1985. In 1987 Pat moved with
her husband, Terry, to Juneau, Alaska. They moved to their home on
the border of Kasilof, Alaska in 1989 where they reside to this
day.
In
1999 Pat returned to her natural talent in art and opened her studio,
Off The Canvas. The majority of her painting was
commissioned realistic pieces and murals. During this time, she
painted a 7’ x 14’ mural at Central
Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska, several large
backdrops for Kenai Performers ranging from 4’ x 8’
to 18’ x 50’, and various murals and smaller
pieces.
Wanting
to expand further than the realistic style she was familiar with, Pat
started her journey to obtain a Fine Arts degree by enrolling
in UAA's Kenai Peninsula College in 2005. By deliberately
taking only 2 classes per semester, she intends to savor every
discovery and insight. She was introduced to the abstract style
of painting through her KPC instructor, Celia Anderson. In 2006, she
won the Juror’s Choice Award in the No Big Heads Juried
Show in Anchorage with a piece created in her new style.
Although
her paintings are largely abstract, her drawings remain photo
realistic. These contrasting styles give her the freedom for a wide
range of interpretation.
